Acceleration Guidelines

These DOM acceleration guidelines provide information about exceptional contributions to UCSF’s academic mission that may be the basis for a faculty member receiving an acceleration. Accelerations require nomination (typically by their Division Chief) with CV and review by the DOM Executive Promotions Committee.  Read the full Accelerated Advancement Criteria document for details.

Below are examples of major milestones that can trigger accelerated advancement.

National and International Honors

Election to the National Academy of MedicineNational Academy of Science, or the National Academy of Engineering
Election to the Association of American Physicians
Election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Election as a Fellow to the American Academy for the Advancement of Science
Lasker Foundation Awards
Appointment as a Howard Hughes Investigator
Receipt by the faculty member of a national service award, national diversity award, or similar honor from a national professional society that represents the highest honor bestowed by that society and is awarded to only one person each year.

UCSF Awards and Honors

Receipt of the Holly Smith Award for University Service
Receipt of the UCSF Lifetime Mentoring Award
UCSF Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award or Distinction in Mentoring Award
Election into the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators
Selection as a DOM Master Clinician
Receipt of the Exceptional Physician Award or similar (e.g., ZSFG Heros & Hearts Award) from a UCSF-affiliated health system

UCSF Service

SOM Admissions Executive Committee (completion of three-year term of service on the high-intensity, time-intensive admissions committee) 
Committee on Human Research (completion of three-year term of service)
Committee on Animal Research (completion of three-year term of service)
Committee on Academic Personnel (completion of three-year term of service) 
Department of Medicine leadership position
New appointment as a DOM division chief
New appointment as an associate or vice chair in the Department of Medicine
