New Faculty Orientation

Faculty orientation for the 2023-2024 year has ended. Check back next summer for orientation dates for fall of 2024.

2023 New Faculty Orientation Summary

New faculty orientation

In the fall, we welcomed a total of 91 new faculty members to the Department of Medicine (DOM). These faculty members were distributed across three different sites: 75 joined UCSF Health, 13 joined Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG), and three joined the San Francisco Veteran Affairs Health Care System (SFVAHCS).

We gathered in person, hosting three different sessions: two at Parnassus and one at ZSFG.

We covered some basics about who we are (including the number and types of faculty, our reputation, honors and activities, and our leadership structure), our missions and vision as a department, and what faculty need to know to be successful within the DOM. The orientation provided an excellent opportunity for new faculty to meet their peers, interact with department leadership, and hear from a panel of early career faculty about their first few years at UCSF.

Department Chair Bob Wachter extended a warm welcome at all three of our sessions and Vice Chair, ZSFG, Neil Powe joined in welcoming faculty at the ZSFG location.

Associate Chair Urmimala Sarkar provided an overview of UCSF, followed by Associate Chair Meshell Johnson, who presented on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in our department. The orientation program also covered the technical aspects of faculty life. Associate Chair Michael Chen discussed the Compensation Plan, and Director of Research Administration and Revenue Management Jon Rueter shed light on Conflict of Interest.

Each orientation session featured an hour-long panel moderated by Bob Wachter, where early career faculty shared their valuable insights on thriving at UCSF during the initial years as faculty. These discussions provided practical advice and guidance, making them a highlight of the day for our newest faculty members. Bob urged new faculty members to say yes to new opportunities, and faculty panelists shared their strategies for balancing multiple roles, getting the most from their mentorship, and honing their professional mission.

The day concluded with lunch, where several of our department’s illustrious Master Clinicians joined the new faculty members. This interaction was a valuable opportunity for networking and sharing experiences. We believe that our new faculty members, with their energy and innovative spirit, will play a crucial role in taking the UCSF Department of Medicine to even greater heights.
